Raccoon Mountain Adventure and Hike
Registration Fee $40.00 which includes a boxed picnic lunch
Join us for a visit to the Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Plant, the largest hydroelectric facility in the TVA system, 15 minutes from the Chattanooga Marriott. We will visit the Visitor Center to learn about the construction and operation of the plant, have a picnic box lunch, stroll on a short, level, and paved trail in the woods near Laurel Point, and view the Tennessee River Gorge across from the Prentice Cooper State Forest, the upper reservoir, and the Chattanooga City Scape from the mountain overlooks as well as drive on the 8,500-foot dam that encircles the 528-acre, 220 feet deep, 10+ billion gallon reservoir. Water is pumped from Nickajack Lake on the Tennessee River (takes 28 hours to fill the reservoir) then the water is released by gravity through an almost 1000-foot deep tunnel to 4 turbine generators taking about 22 hours to empty the reservoir. The field trip is a great learning experience with beautiful scenery, while stretching your legs and having a picnic lunch in a wooded setting!
